How to Make a Cortado

How to Make a Cortado

What You’ll Need

  1. Espresso Machine
  2. Freshly Ground Espresso Coffee Beans
  3. Milk Frother or steam wand
  4. Milk (whole milk for best results, but alternatives like oat or almond milk also work)
  5. Small Glass (Cortado glass)

Step 1: Brew the Espresso

  • Start by brewing a double shot of espresso using your espresso machine. A cortado typically uses a double shot to balance the milk and coffee ratio perfectly.

Step 2: Steam the Milk

  • Heat and steam about 2 ounces (60 ml) of milk. The milk should be warm but not frothy, as the cortado has little to no foam. Aim for a silky, smooth texture.

Step 3: Combine Espresso and Milk

  • Pour the freshly brewed espresso into your small glass. Gently add the steamed milk on top, maintaining the 1:1 ratio between espresso and milk.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  • Your cortado is ready to enjoy! This balanced drink combines the boldness of espresso with the smoothness of steamed milk for a satisfying flavor.
